A 37-year-old woman has given birth to 10 twins in Gauteng, South Africa, breaking the Guinness World Record.
Medical imaging showed that she would have six children, and the next ultrasound examination eight children, and eventually Sithole gave birth to 7 males and 3 females by caesarean section during the seventh month of pregnancy.
Professor Denny Mawela, from Sivako McGathu University of Health Sciences, said Ghossiam’s case is rare and usually occurs after receiving fertility treatments.
She added: “This type of pregnancy is dangerous and complicated due to the lack of sufficient space in the uterus, which affects the children’s birth weight, contributes to their early birth, and jeopardizes their chances of survival.”
The previous record was set in 2009 for an American woman after giving birth to 8 children.
