A unique pink-purple diamond known as “Sakura” broke records, selling for $ 29.3 million and becoming the most expensive purple-pink diamond ever sold at auction.

Christie’s auction house, which took over the sale, said the diamond is “flawless internally” and “exquisitely vivid,” which measures the color of the stone.

In a statement, he explained that the gem, which amounted to 15.81 carats, was part of “another important chapter in the history of jewelry auction.”

“The strong selling rates and exceptional prices achieved for high-quality colored diamonds and gemstones reflect strong market demand, and we look forward to extending this strong buying momentum to our next live auction in New York on June 8,” said Vicky Sick, Christie’s Head of Jewelry, in the statement.
CNBC reported that the person who bought “Sakura” is a private buyer from Asia, without providing additional details.

Christie’s noted that only four percent of the pink diamonds are rated “luxury bright”, and only 10 percent are over 0.2 carat weight, making “sakura” extremely rare.

The pinkish-purple diamond was part of a larger sale, which saw more than $ 76.8 million in jewelry sale, including another pink diamond known as The Sweet Heart, which sold for just over $ 6.5 million.

“Sakura,” which is Japanese for cherry blossoms, is “exactly” the share of cherry blossoms, Seck told CNN in a telephone interview.

She added that pink diamonds generally have “a lot of grains”, which makes this gemstone “very rare.”
