The Ecuadorian Environment Ministry reports that the famous “Darwin Arch” has collapsed in the Galapagos Islands.
“We inform you that the Darwin Arch collapsed on May 17, and it is an attractive natural bridge located one kilometer from Darwin Island in the far north of the Galapagos Islands,” read a statement issued by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment. The ministry said on “Twitter” that the collapse was caused by natural erosion.
The ministry recalled that the Arch of Darwin is one of the symbols of the islands. It is considered one of the best places to dive, as well as a place to spot sharks and other marine creatures.
It is worth noting that in 2017 the island of Malta witnessed the collapse of a limestone rock with a height of 28 meters. Known worldwide as the “Azure Window”. It has been included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list.
Malta’s Environment Minister, Jose Herrera, announced at the time that experts had already predicted the collapse of the rock based on the results of scientific research. And it was impossible to stop this process by outside interference.
