5 university students in China have been sentenced to prison terms after obtaining free meals worth about 30,000 US dollars for defrauding the KFC fast food restaurant.

According to the British newspaper, The Independent, the mastermind of the fraud, and Shaw’s hand, took advantage of a bug in the phone application to obtain 22,000 pounds worth of fried chicken for free, or about $ 30,000.

The young man, who hails from east China’s Jiangsu Province, first discovered a system bug in April 2018 and noticed that by switching between the app and the chain’s official WeChat account, he could create an unlimited number of free food vouchers.

Xu said he was “overjoyed” after the discovery, and 4 of his friends began to do the same.

A Shanghai court ruled that Shaw should be sentenced to two and a half years in prison for fraud and “transmitting criminal methods”, in addition to a fine of about $ 930.

The other four defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 months to two years and fines ranging between $ 155 and $ 617.
