An Australian minister resigns over an investigation into his sexual behavior

Gareth Ward, an MP from the Australian state of New South Wales has resigned from his position as Minister of Families and the Liberal Party, after information that police are investigating his sexual behavior.

“A journalist informed me that the NSW police are investigating me,” Ward said in a statement, noting that “I have not been contacted by the police regarding any allegations, and I deny any wrongdoing.”

He added, “Until this issue is resolved, it is appropriate that I resign my position as a minister and from the liberal party room.”

Just hours ago, New South Wales Police issued a statement revealing that they were investigating the behavior of a 39-year-old man, without revealing his identity.

The police said, “The child abuse and sexual crimes squad is investigating allegations of crimes related to sexual violence against a 39-year-old man,” indicating that “these incidents have been reported since 2013,” without providing further information.
