The Malian government said that a female citizen gave birth to 9 twins outside the country today, Tuesday, and that all the children are “in good health”, although the host country’s authorities have yet to confirm what could be an extremely rare case.
The Malian government transferred 25-year-old Halima Cissé, a woman from the impoverished north African country, to Morocco to seek better care on March 30, and was initially believed to be carrying seven twins, according to Agence France-Presse.
Cases of women who successfully conceive seven twins in their seventies until the end of pregnancy are rare, while cases of nine twins are more rare.
For his part, a spokesman for the Moroccan Ministry of Health, Rachid Kazri, said that he was not aware of multiple births occurring in a hospital in the country. But the Malian Ministry of Health said in a statement that Cisse had given birth to five girls and four boys by Caesarean section.
“The mother and the babies are fine so far,” Financial Health Minister Fanta Sepi told AFP, adding that the financial doctor who accompanied Cisse to Morocco informed her of the matter, adding that they were scheduled to return home within several weeks.
Earlier, the Ministry of Financial Health said in a statement that ultrasound examinations conducted in both Mali and Morocco indicated that Cisse was carrying 7 children.
