Study: Mushrooms contain a substance that kills depression

A recent study reported that mushrooms or mushrooms contain a highly effective substance in eliminating depressive episodes.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) said that the mushroom contains a narcotic compound that is a magic cure for depression, with an effective degree that competes with regular medicines.

This came after British researchers revealed the difference between the therapeutic potential of “psilocybin”, which is found in mushrooms, and the anti-depressant drug “escitalopram”, as they conducted their experiments on 59 people suffering from moderate to severe depression, over a period of 6 weeks.

The researchers found that despite the lower degrees of depression among those who took the substance and the drug, the decrease was faster and greater in those who took psilocybin, which is found in the mushrooms. However, the researchers cautioned that the main comparison between psilocybin and the antidepressant escitalopram was not Statistically significant, which calls for trials on a larger number of patients and for a longer period.

The “Daily Mail” newspaper quoted Dr. Robin Carhart Harris, who led the study, as saying that “the importance of this study is to inform people that treatment of psilocybin can be better than more common anti-depressants.”

Professor David Natt, a specialist in psychopharmacology and neuropsychology at Imperial College London, said: “The effect builds up within about 30 to 40 minutes, and after that, for most people, the effect of the substance extends to about 3 to 4 hours.”

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, people treated with psilocybin showed improved ability to feel pleasure and express emotions.
