The Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honor, was sold at auction for 248,000 pounds.

According to the BBC, British King George V awarded the soldier the military medal to James Towers on May 8, 1919 in honor of his heroism during World War I after he was able to transmit a secret message to another unit under enemy fire.

According to the agency, Towers succeeded in carrying out the assigned mission despite the killing of five of his colleagues.

The identity of the buyer was not revealed.
