Reports revealed, today, Monday, that the American company “Uber” for transportation services has become providing customers in the British capital, London, with the option of electric cars.
The “Financial Times” newspaper reported that Uber users in central London could order a fully electric vehicle instead of the regular fuel-powered cars.
The new service, called “Uber Green” due to its preservation of the environment, was launched from Monday in District 1 in London, as part of Uber’s efforts to become fully electric in London by 2025.
The newspaper added that the company “Uber” specified that trips by electric cars should be in Zone 1, while destinations were not restricted within its borders.
“We continue to partner with drivers to help them switch to electric cars, and today we are excited to start offering passengers an option to choose an electric car at no additional cost, allowing everyone to use,” said Jimmy Heywood, general manager of Uber in the European Union. Uber is “doing its part to clean up urban transport.”
To motivate drivers to switch to electric cars, Uber is offering a 15% reduction on the usual service fee, after it had imposed in January 2019 a fee of $ 20 per mile to help drivers switch to environmentally friendly cars, until this moment. The company raised $ 172 million because of this policy.
Uber has boosted the number of electric vehicles in its London fleet from 100 to 1,600 cars. However, this is a small percentage of its strong London fleet of 45,000 cars.
