Hurricanes and storms sweep through the American South

56

Hurricanes and severe storms swept deep into the American South, killing at least five people, as strong winds destroyed homes and knocked down power lines and trees.

And the hurricane, which struck western Georgia early Friday, was described by meteorologists as “large and dangerous.”

John De Block, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, said that as many as eight hurricanes may have struck Alabama on Thursday, noting that multiple hurricanes arose from the storms that later moved to Georgia.

In Ohio, more than 100,000 people were without electricity early Friday after thunderstorms that triggered winds of 50 miles per hour (80 km / h).
