Today, Sunday, the celebration of the World Down Syndrome Day coincided with the outbreak of the new Corona virus, which raises questions about whether patients with the syndrome are more vulnerable to the epidemic.
The International Down Syndrome Association, answered these questions, by explaining that there is no evidence that people with Down syndrome are at particular risk of contracting corona, according to the “Al-Ain” website.
However, it indicated that they may be more susceptible to infections in general, and respiratory infections in particular.
Despite the association’s denials, there is evidence indicating that the epidemic may pose a greater risk to people suffering from other chronic health conditions.
According to this evidence, a number of children and adults with Down syndrome will fall into these groups at greater risk.
The association stated on its official website that people with Down syndrome may have slower immune responses than the general population.
And she believed that the weakness of this response could become more pronounced with age.
The United Nations General Assembly had adopted its resolution by declaring March 21 a World Down Syndrome Day, to be celebrated annually, starting in 2012.
