Champions League winners and losers from quarter-final draw as road to final becomes clear

54

The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals has produced four unmissable ties.

Manchester City will play Borussia Dortmund, Porto take on Chelsea, Bayern Munich face PSG in a repeat of last season’s final and Liverpool go head-to-head with Real Madrid.

The first leg of these ties is scheduled to take place on April 6 and 7, with the return fixtures on April 13 and 14.

But who are the winners and losers of this draw? take a look.

Winners – Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel’s side booked their place in the last eight of the competition with a convincing 3-0 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side are well-known for their defensive stubbornness but were breached with ease at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea took control of the the contest.

The Blues are now unbeaten in the 14 matches since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager and will fancy their chances of progressing to the final.

Porto will by no means be an easy test but the London side have addressed their defensive struggles, conceding just two goals since late January.

Should Chelsea overcome the Portuguese side, they will face Liverpool or Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were outplayed when the sides met at Anfield earlier this month, with Mason Mount’s strike earning all three points for the Blues.

Madrid, meanwhile, are by no means at their best.

Winners – Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s side may not be firing on all cylinders in the Premier League, but the Champions League is competition in which they often rise to the occasion.

Liverpool swept aside RB Leipzig to reach the quarter-finals and will fancy their chances against a Real Madrid side past the peak of their powers.

The Reds will require no extra motivation heading into this tie as they look to avenge their 2018 Champions League final defeat to Los Blancos and could benefit from the way in which domestic fixtures have fallen.

Liverpool host Aston Villa on April 10, four days after the first leg, while Madrid will take on Barcelona in El Clasico. With the La Liga title still up for grabs in a three-horse race, this is very much a make-or-break fixture.

Chelsea or Porto await the winner of this tie, representing a preferable passage to the final in Istanbul.

Losers – Borussia Dortmund

All eyes will be on Erling Haaland as Borussia Dormund take on Manchester City, but the German side are in for an extremely tough test despite the brilliance of their star man.

Dortmund edged past Sevilla 5-4 on aggregate in the Round of 16, but have not faced opposition of this quality throughout this season’s competition.

The Bundesliga outfit faced Lazio, Club Brugge and Zenit in the group stages and will now take on the favourites, who will pose a much greater threat.

Things won’t get any easier for Edin Terzic’s men either. If City are defeated, it will be Bayern Munich or PSG in the semi-final.

Losers – Bayern Munich

Last season’s Champions League winners will face a testing defence of their European crown.

Bayern have been paired with PSG, who comfortably knocked out Barcelona to reach this stage.

Hansi Flick’s side will still fancy their chances of reaching the semi-finals, but will then be likely met by Manchester City: Bayern’s biggest remaining threat.

Had the Bundesliga champions been drawn the alternative route, their chances of reaching a second successive final would have increased dramatically.
