HBO has announced that it will explore the life of late Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy.
Producers have promised to delve deep into the actress’ story and “go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines”.
The company has insisted that it will provide viewers with an “in-depth, intimate character portrait” of the star.
The actress died in mysterious circumstances aged 32 in 2009.
Her cause of death was ruled an accident, with a coroner blaming a combination of pneumonia and over-the-counter medications she had taken.
Less than six months later Murphy’s British husband Simon Monjack, 40, died at the same house under similar circumstances.
Producers at HBO have promised the new documentary will explore “the mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death” of the actress who starred in movies such as Clueless, 8 Mile and Just Married.
The network added that the production will include interviews with people who were closest to the actress.
Jennifer O’Connell, executive vice president, non-fiction and live-action family programming at HBO Max, said: “Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story.
“Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation.”
Cynthia Hill is directing the documentary.
The news of Brittany’s death over 20 years ago shook Hollywood.
The star was reported to have died after suddenly collapsing in the arms of her mother just before Christmas in 2009.
She had reportedly been suffering flu-type symptoms in the days beforehand, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
At the time of her death, husband Simon said: “I had no idea she had pneumonia. I took very good care of my wife, she was on an antibiotic and she was taking cough medicine and doing all the right things.”
