The André Steinen International Competition for Young Photographers has finished accepting works, and the first results for 2021 have been announced.
In its new year, the competition sought to expand the scope of geographical participation, and for the first time in its history, young photographers from Tunisia, Thailand and the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) sent their works to the competition.
In all, around 4,500 works were submitted to this year’s competition, from 70 countries around the world from all five continents.
Among the foreign participants, India topped the list of participating works, in terms of the number of applications submitted, and the presence of participants from India increased by 40% compared to last year. Participants from India were ranked first in the top 10 contestants, along with Russian photographers, whose work increased by nearly 20%.
The top five also include correspondents from Iran, Bangladesh, Italy and China. They are followed by journalists from Spain, France and Brazil, as photographers from Brazil doubled the number of applications submitted to the competition this world compared to last year. At the bottom of the list are journalists from Germany and Mexico, where they occupy the tenth place.
According to the curator of the competition, Head of Visual Projects Service at the “Russia Segodnya” media group, Oksana Oleinik, the high professional level of the business and the enthusiasm of the contestants confirm the increased demand for photography as a news model in the modern world and the popularity of the competition in the international media scene.
Each year we eagerly await new entrants from new countries to compete, and we are never disappointed in our prospects.
Oleinik stressed that very few countries remain on the geographical map of the world who do not know about our competition or have not participated in it.
The international arbitration team will begin its work to select the best submitted works at the end of next April, and the short list of winners will be announced on June 16th on the competition’s website.
The award ceremony will take place in September in the Russian capital, Moscow, in conjunction with the international artistic tour of the prize winners’ works. This tour includes, according to competition traditions, major exhibition sites in 12 cities in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
And since 2018, the headquarters in New York of the international organization dealing with issues of strengthening peace and security in all countries – the United Nations (UN), has been among the important exhibition platforms for the competition. Since 2019, the competition exhibitions have been held in the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
The “Andrei Steinen” international photojournalism competition, organized by the agency “Russia Segodnia” under the auspices of the Russian Committee for UNESCO, aims to support young photographers and draw attention to the challenges of modern photojournalism. It is a platform for young and talented photographers to direct our attention to people and events close to us.
