One migrant was killed and others wounded by landmines exploding in Croatia

38

A migrant was killed and two others were injured in a landmine explosion Thursday in a forest in western Croatia. According to the Croatian authorities, these landmines were left over from the war of the 1990s.

The illegal immigrants who moved in groups had crossed the border between Bosnia and Croatia illegally when they found themselves in a forest littered with mines in the Saporsko region, police said.

After monitoring the area, the police managed to rescue ten more people from the minefield early Friday morning.

Four wounded were taken to hospital, one of them in critical condition. The police did not reveal the nationalities of the migrants, but according to the hospital, two of them are of Pakistani nationality.

About 300 square kilometers of Croatian territory is still considered a dangerous area after 25 years of war in 1992 and 1995.
