US Congressional Headquarters police have asked the Pentagon to extend the stay of the National Guard, tasked with protecting the Capitol, in Washington for another two months.
An American official said, in an interview with “Reuters”, today, Thursday, who requested anonymity, that the Pentagon has received the official request and will consider it, but said that it will likely be approved.
There are currently about 5,200 National Guard personnel protecting the Capitol, and the mission is due to end on March 12.
US National Guard forces, including 20,000 people, deployed in the Capitol area in January 2021 for the first time since the civil war in the United States, in an urgent move that took place against the backdrop of the storming of Congress on January 6 by supporters of the former US president, Donald Trump, during Disturbances claimed 5 lives.
