The Italian Competition Supervisory Authority stated that it fined Facebook 7 million euros for failing to comply with a request to correct improper business practices in its handling of user data.
“The current investigation proved that Facebook did not publish the revised statement, nor did it stop the entrenched unfair practices,” the regulator said in its statement. In November 2018, the Antitrust Authority ruled that Facebook had not properly informed users about the data collection. It was used, and it was fined 5 million euros (about 5.5 million dollars). The authority also required Facebook to publish a modified statement on the main page of its website for Italy, on the “Facebook” application, and on the personal page of each registered Italian user.
For his part, a Facebook spokesperson said, “The company has noticed the regulator’s announcement, but is awaiting the State Council’s decision on our appeal against the authority’s preliminary results.”
The spokesman added that “Facebook” has already made changes, including to the duration of service, to clarify how the data is used to provide its services and personalized ads.
