Sophie Wessex and Prince Edward learnt from Charles’ relationship mistake with Diana

Prince Edward’s marriage to Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is secure because he made sure he “got to know” her properly, a royal commentator has claimed. Marlene Koenig spoke to Express.co.uk about royal relationships and the major mistake that is no longer being made. She pointed to the situation involving Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

Ms Koenig told Express.co.uk: “How Charles and Camilla got to where they are, and the scandals that came with it, has happened.

“We know a lot more now.

“You should actually get to know your spouse before you get married.

“That wasn’t the case for Charles and Diana.”

She continued: “But for William, Harry and Prince Edward it has been.

“Edward and Sophie were together for almost eight years.

“The spouse needs to be introduced properly to royal life.

“I think Camilla has now been embraced although it took a while.”

In comparison to Charles and Diana, the Wessexes have always much more private.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had already separated a year before Sophie and Edward met.

The eventual husband and wife first ran into each other at a charity event in 1993.

By December that year, they had been quietly dating for a few months.

However, the relationship didn’t take long to come to light after a journalist confronted Sophie about it.

After almost eight years together, Edward proposed to his long-term girlfriend in 1999.

Their wedding took place on June 19 St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

In this time, Charles’ marriage to Diana had officially ended in divorce and the princess had died in a car crash a mere year later.
