Lukashenko: There is a possibility to merge the constitutional referendum process with local elections

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko revealed, Friday, that the referendum on the updated draft of the constitution for Belarus could be combined with the local elections in January 2022.

The Belarusian president’s comments came to “Sputnik” during the All-Belarus Parliament meeting during which he said, “I am convinced that we will come up with a new draft constitution by the end of this year, and we will adopt this basic legal document for the referendum within the next 11-12 months.”

“Perhaps the referendum process will be combined with the local elections,” Lukashenko added.

It is worth noting that Belarus is witnessing protests against the results of the recent presidential elections in the country, which, according to the Belarusian Election Commission, the current president of the country, Alexander Lukashenko won.

The opposition considers that fraud has occurred in these elections, at a time when the Belarusian authorities consider that the protests in the country are directed from abroad with the aim of destabilizing Belarus.
