Corrie icon Beverley Callard won’t be returning to the Cobbles – hinting that her character Liz McDonald could die off-screen.
Back in November 2019, Bev waved the soap goodbye after 30 years, with Liz’ son Steve (Simon Gregson) revealing in a throwaway comment that she’d emigrated to Spain.
Bev never got to shoot her final scenes after a hip operation and Covid threw a spanner in the works, and the I’m A Celeb star has teased that she could be back some day for a proper send-off.
Now, though, it seems as though Bev has ruled out a comeback, saying she felt her departure was “for the right reasons.”
She told The Sunday Express : “I loved Coronation Street. I still do and I always will.
“But sometimes it’s just not your turn on the merry-go-round. It was a massive decision for me to make, but I believe I did it for the right reasons.
“I felt Liz had run her course. I’d hate to cheat any fans out there who were waiting and hoping for something amazing to happen to her. I felt like she’d lost her way.”
Bev did admit that she would love to see Liz reunite with Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson), adding: “Sadly you can’t decide your own storylines and since I’m not going to film an exit, they could even kill me off screen.
“If they do I’ll accept it with grace. I’ve thought long and hard about this and know that this time I’ve shut the door on Coronation Street forever.”
Since leaving Corrie, she kept us entertained during the December lockdown on I’m A Celeb, swiftly establishing herself as a favourite among fans and campmates alike.
Bev grew especially close to Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, who ended up coming second to Queen of the Castle Giovanna Fletcher.
Meanwhile, she recently took the time to remember “darling friend” and Corrie co-star Anne Kirkbride six years on from her death from breast cancer.
“6 years ago I lost my darling friend. Miss her every single day, love never dies xx,” Bev wrote.
