But the Mexican team, the CONCACAF champion, responded with two successive goals, through its French striker André Pierre Gignac, in the two minutes (38 and 45 from a penalty kick) for the opening match of the tournament, which was held today, Thursday, at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, in Al Rayyan.
And the Tigres team hit a date in the semifinals, with the representative of South America, the Brazilian team Palmeiras, the champion of “Copa Libertadores”, next Sunday.
It is noteworthy that Tigres is participating for the first time in the World Cup, after crowning the CONCACAF Cup champion at the expense of Los Angeles, the USA champion, with two goals to one, in the final held in Orlando, USA, last December.
While Ulsan Hyundai, the AFC Champions League title holder, previously participated in the Club World Cup, after winning the Champions League for the first time in its history in 2012.
Six clubs are competing for the title of the current version of the World Cup, after the withdrawal of Auckland City, New Zealand, the Oceania champion, due to travel restrictions due to the outbreak of the Corona virus epidemic, and the six clubs that will compete in this exceptional version of the World Cup are: Al-Duhail Qatar (the host), and Al-Ahly of Egypt (the African champion) ), Bayern Munich (European champion), South Korean Ulsan Hyundai (Asian champion), Mexican Tigers (CONCACAF champion), in addition to the South American representative of the Brazilian team Palmeiras, the champion of “Copa Libertadores”.
